Video: Brandon Jacobs, Muhammad Wilkerson Fight at Giants-Jets Game

Brandon Jacobs - Muhammad Wilkerson

Giant’s running back, Brandon Jacobs and Jet’s rookie, running back, Muhammad Wilkerson were ejected from Monday night’s pre-season matchup in New York.

With 8:37 left in the third quarter, Mario Manningham caught a 7 yard pass around the 7 yard line. As the play nearly ended, back at the 30 yard line, Jacobs and Wilkerson were pushing, shoving and throwing a few swings at each other. Both players were ejected and unable to return for the remainder of the game.

Two players did wrong and they had to pay the price. What really has blood boiling is the way the coaches handled the situation. New York Giants Coach, Tom Coughlin seemed rather upset at the whole situation, he said:

“That’s not good football . . . that’s something you just don’t want to see. You can’t lose your control is the message there. And when you do, you have to pay the price.”

Jet’s head coach, Rex Ryan, on the other hand didn’t think anything was wrong with the situation.

“I can understand it because I think both guys swung at each other,” Ryan said. “Our guy swung second. He swung hard, but he swung second.”

Is he saying it’s okay to swing if he gets swung at? Is that the kind of sportsmanship Rex is teaching his team?

Is Rex Developing A Pattern?

Like nostalgia, this brings back a time when Rex Ryan defended his team’s strength coach, Sal Alosi, after tripping Miami Dolphins player, Nolan Carroll on the sideline.

Ryan called the incident with Alosi “a terrible thing,” but refused to call it a pattern of bad behavior. This incident following Braylon Edwards’ drunk driving arrest last season.

It’s plain and clear that Ryan attempts to preserve a good image by defending himself and his team but little does he know that he’s setting this example for his team. Since their head coach defends anything and everything they do, they will keep doing. Will this affect their future as a football team? If this continues will it impact the Jets franchise?
