CC Sabathia Picks Up First Win Against Red Sox

Grinding It Out

He did not have his best stuff. He hit the first batter of the game. He had a full count after full count on batter after batter. He had thrown over 115 pitches at the end of the fifth inning.

He is CC Sabathia and he finally beat the Boston Red Sox for the first time in the 2011 season, as the New York Yankees took the first game of a crucial three game set at Fenway Park, 5-2. After previously losing all four of his starts and posting a 7.20 ERA against the rival Sox, CC battled, scratched, and crawled his way to a win in front of the hostile Fenway faithful.

It didn’t seem like CC would nearly go the distance, but the big south paw showed that the past means nothing, hurling six innings of two run ball. A six inning game from your number one starter and Cy Young candidate against the Red Sox isn’t exactly ideal, but CC put the Yankees in a position to win the game and inch closer to first place. The Yankees are now a half game back and even in the loss column.

Even though he put men on base almost every inning and threw a lot of pitches early in the game, CC worked his way out of every jam and stopped the bleeding, keeping the damage to a minimum. His most impressive bail outs came in the second inning, escaping the bases loaded unscathed and in the fifth inning, getting two quick outs to erase a Red Sox rally with runners on second and third with one out.

There is not much else to say about the Yankee big man. His velocity and fast ball were still strong, hitting 96 MPH against Adrian Gonzalez; the last batter he faced. He registered ten strikeouts, put the ball in the hands of the strong Yankee bullpen with the lead, and delegated his responsibility to Cory Wade, Boone Logan, Rafael Soriano and Mariano Rivera to get twelve outs and help solidify the win.

Every Yankee fan envisions a solid, eight inning outing from the Yankee ace every start. And even before Mariano Rivera enters the game, we all know that we can do as Michael Kay so often says and “put this one in the left column.” Even a strong, seven inning outing from a Yankee starter has practically guaranteed victory this year with the emergence of David Robertson and his “Houdini-like” presence on the mound.

He had to work a little harder for this one last night against the Red Sox in a must win. He didn’t lay the red carpet out for Rivera and Robertson after starring in his own show for seven or eight innings. He worked from the stretch every inning and grinded this one out.

But he is still CC Sabathia and he is still the guy the Yankees want on that mound.
