Jets, Giants Set For Preseason Clash Delayed By Hurricane Irene

NFL: Preseason-New York Giants at New York Jets

It will be a Battle for New York Monday night as the Giants and Jets square off at the newly named MetLife Stadium. One fight that has already been decided has been between kickoff time and Mother Nature. This game was originally scheduled for Sunday night, but was shifted twice in order to avoid the effects of Hurricane Irene.

It will be the first time Jets wide receiver Plaxico Burress faces his former team. Burress, a Giant from 2005-08, caught the game-winning touchdown pass in Super Bowl XLII to defeat the New England Patriots 17-14. In his Jets debut last week against Cincinnati, Burress had three catches for 66 yards including an over-the-shoulder touchdown reception just before the end of the first half.
The Jets are coming into this game off an impressive 27-7 victory over the Bengals. Mark Sanchez looked solid for a second consecutive game, completing 12 of 20 passes for 173 yards. The Jets were also effective on the other side of the ball, forcing Bengals rookie quarterback Andy Dalton into throwing interceptions to safeties Eric Smith and Jim Leonhard, respectively. Dalton finished the game completing 8 of 19 passes.

It has been a trying preseason for the Giants. Offensive line stalwarts Rich Seubert and Shaun O’Hara were let go. There was the saga of whether Burress would be welcomed back to the team. There was Osi Umenyiora’s contract dispute and subsequent knee injury requiring him to undergo arthroscopic surgery. Heralded first-round draft choice Prince Amukamara broke his foot, and cornerback Terrell Thomas ended his season by tearing his ACL in the game against the Chicago Bears. Cornerbacks Bruce Johnson, Brian Witherspoon and defensive tackle Marvin Austin are also done for the year.  The Giants reacted by signing former St. Louis Ram defensive lineman Jimmy Kennedy and former Atlanta Falcon cornerback Brian Williams.

The injury to Thomas marred what was otherwise a resounding victory for the Giants 41-13 over Chicago. Among the highlights, Brandon Jacobs rushed for 48 yards and one touchdown on six carries. Da’Rel Scott rushed for a 97-yard touchdown. Devin Thomas returned three kickoffs for 138 yards.

This will not be the last time the Giants and Jets square off this season. The two are scheduled to play each other in Week 16 on Christmas Eve.
