Bartolo Colon, Yankees Fall to the Orioles

Bartolo Colon (Nick Wass/AP)

This afternoon, the Yankees lost 0-2 in the first game of a split doubleheader versus the Baltimore Orioles. Bartolo Colon pitched quite well (7 2/3 IP, 7 hits, 2 runs, 0BB), but his performance went to waste. The winning pitcher was Baltimore rookie Zach Britton, the same guy who the Bombers hit for 12 runs in the first inning of the Yankees-Orioles game on July 30th, 2011. Derek JeterAlex Rodriguez, and Curtis Granderson went 0-4 today. Robinson Cano was 0-3.

Colon had lost his two previous starts against Kansas City and Oakland, respectively, so this was an important outing for the shaky Yankees’ rotation. It was important for another reason as well:  At the start of the day, the Yankees were 78-51 and the division-leading Red Sox were 82-51, so the teams were tied in the all-important loss column. With the Yankees scheduled to play two games today and one tomorrow, and the Sox with both days off, New York had the chance to almost catch up.

The 53-77 Orioles have embarrassed the Bombers in the first two games of this set. Will the Yanks redeem themselves tonight? To find out, tune in at 7:35pm, as Ivan Nova takes the mound against Brian Matusz…if you still have power.
