Giants Preseason Week 2 Preview: Manning May Get Mauled by Bears

Eli Manning (UPI /John Angelillo)

Eli Manning’s big mouth may get him in trouble. After placing himself in the same class as Tom Brady, defensive linemen across the league will be chomping at the bit to prove him wrong. When the teams met in 2010, the Giants manhandled the Bears offensive line to the tune 10 sacks. This time around, I think the Bears will be looking for payback.

Battle in the Trenches

With Osi Umenyiora out 3-4 weeks due to surgery, Jason Pierre-Paul will be itching to prove last week’s two sack game (in which he only played a quarter) wasn’t a fluke. In addition, Mathias Kiwanuka is back from the injury that ended his 2010 season, and the six-year vet will certainly help in Osi’s absence.

The Bears and Giants have the second and fifth best defense against the run, respectively, and all that gets started at the line. Watch for Chris Tillman and Terrell Thomas to come up with some tackles in the trenches.

Key Match-ups

Will Beatty has been getting a lot of press for his handling of Pierre-Paul and Umenyiora in camp, but Carolina’s young defensive ends didn’t test Beatty enough. The Bears will send Julius Peppers at him, and we will see how much has improved.

What to Watch For: Quarterback’s Egos

When Eli Manning stated he was in the same class as Tom Brady, it opened the floodgates for haters. The comment, made to ESPN New York 1050, set off the national media as well as the everyday fan. This is Manning’s first attempt to prove his worth.

Last week, Manning looked shaky, going 4/9 for 36 yards. Although his surrounding cast of characters might have something to do with that.

On the Bears side of the field, Jay Cutler has been looking for redemption after last year’s NFC Championship Game. Cutler finished his season in 2010 on the sidelines, suffering from a knee injury. The move earned condemnation from analysts and fans, alike.

The redemption of these two leaders will be a story to follow on Monday.
