Congratulations to Chicago for gutting out a tough win over Brooklyn. Their prize is a series against a very well-rested Miami Heat. (http://scientopia.org/)

The first round is complete, and had plenty of drama. The Warriors pulled off a big upset against the best home team in the NBA. Houston pushed the Thunder before finally falling in six. The Bulls fought off the Nets in a grueling seven-game series. Now, they have the honor of facing a Miami team that’s had a week off to rest up and prepare. Good luck with that.

The Bulls were the only team to defy the predictions of all five of our panelists, who all had the Nets moving on. One person, though, was able to have the clairvoyance to see Golden State’s victory, which certainly helped out their cause. Memphis and Los Angeles were entertaining to watch as expected. Only two panelists picked the Grizzlies, but all five knew it would be close.

So where does this leave everyone after the first round is done? Check below for the results, and check back Monday for the second round selections. Continue reading 2013 NBA Playoffs Expert Picks: First Round Results »

Toronto has gone nearly half a century without a Stanley Cup; will they be able to get through a stacked Eastern Conference to get another? (ared Wickerham/Getty Images)

The playoffs are upon us, and there are plenty of good match-ups. Boston backed into the postseason and faces Toronto, who you don’t usually see in May. The Blackhawks and Penguins easily solidified their positions. Ottawa barely avoided Pittsburgh in the first round, while Minnesota is just happy to be in, winning a tiebreaker over Columbus.

All of that mix made for some interesting choices for our expert panel. Aside from the two #1/#8 series, only Boston and Toronto had a unanimous winner in all pick sets. And whoever got the nod in their series, St Louis and Los Angeles look to be the most fun to watch, with everyone but one choosing the series to go a full seven games.

As usual, correctly guessing the winner of a series is worth two points, while guessing how many games a series will last is worth one point.

So now that everything is underway, be sure to check below for everyone’s picks, and check back for the results after the first round is complete. Continue reading 2013 NHL Playoffs Expert Picks »

Red Sox vs Braves: Week 4's prediction for the World Series

April is almost over already, and there are plenty of teams that are shaking up the standings from what many expected. Boston, Kansas City and Pittsburgh have all turned things around quite nicely from last season. The Dodgers, Blue Jays and Angels, on the other hand, have completely failed to live up to the hype. Teams are running over each other in the standings even now, so let’s look at what would happen if the playoffs started as of Monday, April 29, before the day’s games: Continue reading If the Playoffs Started Today – MLB Week 4 »

The Patriots went into the 2013 Draft with just five picks, but raised that number to eight on Thursday by trading their first-rounder to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for four later selections. Bill Belichick largely addressed his team’s needs by taking two wide receivers and two defensive backs, but drafted just one defensive lineman, instead bolstering the linebacking corps with two more picks.

On Saturday, the Patriots traded the seventh-rounder they’d received from Minnesota, along with Jeff Demps, to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for running back LeGarrette Blount. The pick in question (no. 229 overall) ended up going full circle, as the Bucs traded it back to the Vikings.

Let’s take a look at the seven rookies, and one veteran RB, that the Patriots added over the weekend:

David Ortiz (Photo by David Banks/Getty Images)

Always the fan favorite, David Ortiz has been the heart and soul of the Red Sox during this emotional first month of the year. While his value goes beyond the white lines for Boston, the question for fantasy baseball players is, how much value does he have purely as a hitter?

Coming off an injury plagued 2012 campaign, Ortiz had hoped that 2013 would be different. He still hit .318/.415/.611 in 90 games last year, but his 23 home runs was the lowest production out of him since 2002. At age 37, the designated hitter is currently trying to stay healthy while the Red Sox begin to put together a potential rebound season. The NFL Draft begins on Thursday, and the New England Patriots approach it with just five picks, as a result of having traded their fourth-round pick for Aqib Talib, their fifth-rounder for Albert Haynesworth and their sixth-rounder for Chad Johnson over the last two years. The Patriots received Tampa Bay’s seventh-round selection in the Talib trade, giving them two picks in the final round, but will have no compensatory selections this year. All in all, these are the Pats’ five picks:

1. Round 1, Pick 29

2. Round 2, Pick 27 (59 overall)

3. Round 3, Pick 29 (91 overall)

4. Round 7, Pick 20 (226 overall, from Buccaneers)

5. Round 7, Pick 29 (235 overall)

Let’s take a look at the three positions the Patriots most urgently need to address in the Draft, and some of the players they could target come Thursday. Today, we look at defensive back.

Braves vs Rangers: Week 3's prediction for the World Series

It’s hard to believe that the season is already almost an eighth over with everyone at or around 20 games played so far. The NL Central is suddenly getting a lot stronger. The Orioles, Royals and now Twins continue to do well. The Tigers and Angels continue to struggle. Many teams are makings noise and have been all season long, so let’s look at what would happen if the playoffs started as of Tuesday, April 23 at 7:05pm: Continue reading If the Playoffs Started Today – MLB Week 3 »
